ST. TURIBUS MISSION SCHOOL

In the 1870s the Catholic Mission, bordering on Clear Lake, east of Lakeside Park, established an Indian School. Although there were several families living at the Mission, with quite a few children, there was never great attendance at the school. The land for the mission was purchased by Fr. Luciano Osuna, who came to Clear Lake in 1867. He, ultimately, acquired 235 acres, about four miles from Kelseyville. He left in 1878. In 1887 the Franciscan Fathers of the Sacred heart province, St. Louis, Missouri took charge of the Indian and white missions in Lake County. They found a dwelling and a church, which was also used as a school. In the corner of the farmland was the Rancheria of 18 or 20 families of Pomo Indians. The U. S. Government withdrew their support in 1900, and from then on only 2 or 3 pupils attended the school. It was finally closed around 1905.
In 1914, with the Indians of Big Valley settled on their Rancheria, the Mission church was moved to the Big Valley Rancheria, off the main highway, on private property. Regular school was taught in this building for several years. In the 1920s the Indian school was moved to the vacant Big Valley schoolhouse in Finley. In about 1930, at the government's request, the Indian school was closed and the students went to either Kelseyville or Lakeport.
